Background
The Sensor Systems division of Goodrich Corporation designs and manufactures aircraft avionics and sensors that provide critical measurements for flight control, cockpit information, and engine control systems. These components travel around the world, to the moon, and even to the outer reaches of the solar system. The products in this case study are windshield wiper systems that are an integral part of today's modern aircraft design.

TTI Solutions in Action
In a recent project, Goodrich was contracted to design the windshield wiper systems for the Embraer ERJ-170/190 regional jet. As is often the case for many companies, the design wasn’t the only challenge.

As a result of past inefficiencies encountered in working with different CAD file formats, Embraer required that Goodrich provide the component CAD model files in Dassault Systemes’ CATIA design software. This created the challenge of getting accurate and modifiable CATIA models to Embraer from the Pro/Engineer software used by the Goodrich design team.

Goodrich realized the capital investment required to install CATIA seats would be substantial, not to mention the time required to get the new software installed and the ensuing time to get everyone trained. Rather than suffer the expense of time and money to install CATIA, Goodrich opted to use the feature-based native-to-native CAD translation solution from Translation Technologies (TTI). With TTI’s revolutionary Acc-u-Trans technology, Goodrich was able to convert the Pro/Engineer design data into native CATIA data rapidly and, more important, accurately.

The Pro/E feature tree is completely and accurately translated to the CATIA feature tree, enabling full modifiability. “TTI provided Goodrich with a technical and economical solution to deliver native CATIA data to Embraer, with excellent service,” said Randy Campbell, Director of Engineering at Sensor Systems, Goodrich Corporation. “We were able to upload the Pro/Engineer design data to TTI over their secure Internet connection, and TTI delivered the native CATIA design data back to us in a fraction of the time it would have taken us to do it ourselves.
