Sandia National Laboratories Utilizes Next Generation Acc-u-Trans Software from TTI
Feature-Based Model Translation Into CATIA V5 For Use in Virtual Reality Environment

Sandia National Laboratories purchased multiple seats of Translation Technologies’ Acc-u-Trans software a little over one year ago and have just completed their most extensive translation project to date.  Acc-u-Trans provides feature-based translation of CAD models between multiple CAD systems.  In addition, Acc-u-Trans analyzes the translated models geometrically to confirm the completeness and accuracy of the translation.

Sandia’s standard CAD System is Pro/Engineer and the Virtual Reality System they selected utilizes a cluster server running CATIA V5 and projecting onto a Fakespace display wall. Sandia purchased Acc-u-Trans after an exhaustive search of translation products.  Larry Varoz of Sandia National Laboratories headed up the project and said, “Acc-u-Trans was the only translation tool we found that gave us the ability to consistently obtain complete feature based models from our Pro/Engineer database for use within CATIA V5.  It was really an issue of model quality, we needed essentially the complete feature-based ProE model to be translated and available within V5 and Acc-u-Trans gave it to us.”

In a recent project, Sandia National Laboratories used Acc-u-Trans to translate 1300 parts and assemblies designed in Pro/Engineer into CATIA V5.  The effort took just under 200 man-hours.  This equates to an average translation completion time of just over 9 minutes per component and slightly more for larger assemblies.  Larry Varoz estimated that using Acc-u-Trans provided Sandia a 50% to 70% time savings over manually re-mastering the models in CAITA V5 and with the analysis tools provided within Acc-u-Trans they are assured of model equivalency.

The translated models will now be used in Sandia’s state of the art virtual reality environment. Larry Varoz added, “Because Acc-u-Trans has provided us with CATIA V5 models complete with materials and other important properties, we will now be able to run simulations and analyses of many different types in our virtual environment.  Engineers will now be able to assess model performance using standard analysis tools such as those provided by MSC as well as feeling the models haptically as they perform assembly and disassembly simulations.”

“The benefits of this type of CAD translation for us have been tremendous, in fact we would not have been able to start this type of cutting edge project without a product such as Acc-u-Trans. There will always be issues when translating CAD models into another CAD system, this system has the tools required to overcome these issues. Acc-u-Trans performed beyond our original expectations and the support we have received from TTI is second to none in the software world,” stated Larry Varoz.
